Singing in Choir
Feb. 26th, 2008 11:16 amSunday I heard the choir at church rehearsing "The 23rd Psalm" by Bobby McFerrin and it was beautiful, but missing a tenor. The volunteer choir director was going to try to sing the tenor part but she just couldn't get it, so they were going to pick a different piece to perform in it's place this Sunday. Usually they have tenor(s) but none are available this Sunday.
I'm a tenor. I really enjoyed the piece. I volunteered on very short notice. I'm going to rehearsal tomorrow night and if it works out I'll be singing with the choir for the one piece on Sunday.
It's been interesting throwing myself into learning a choir piece in three days. It's a very short piece and relatively easy, but I also haven't sight-read for voice in years or even really sang in any sort of choir for even longer. I was confident I could do it but also mixed with some trepidation because of my previous concerns.
I've got the tenor part down well enough. The trick is going to be getting the hang of the four measures of speech rhythms, but I can't get that until I'm with the choir and get a sense for how they've rehearsed the rhythms. The tenor melody is very simple and the only jumps are from seven (ti) to five (sol) and then back up to root (do), but this is a pretty common melody movement and very easy to get. The trickiest part is in the sixth measure where I have to sing a lowered seven as though I were suddenly in f minor rather than F major. In fact, as I was practicing it in the shower this morning I ended up stuck in f minor so it took me a couple of passes through the F major scale to get my bearings back.
It should be interesting. I'm really enjoying this but I'm not sure I'm comfortable enough with my voice or motivated enough to sing with the choir on a more permanent basis. I was really more interested in helping out on a piece that just really sounded too beautiful to be passed over.
