The car died. Surprise. I knew today was too good to be true. I think its the fuel pump, but for a 20-year-old rust bucket Ford, I don't think I'm going to bother. I think its time I just go to a dealer and get a decent used car instead of picking up other peoples' 20-year-old junk.

Sounds like a good idea. However, you can still bad cars from dealers. We just took Lauren to get a car through carmax. It was a really easy process. Much easier without haggling.

It's true. Dealers can still sell bad cars. The upside, though, is I can get a more recent vehicle with financing and not have to worry so much about needing a bunch of repairs. Right now the Ford needs:

brake booster
brakes
heater fan
license plate lights
body work for rust and rot
suspension work
recent random fuel delivery issue

I might get one or two problems from a dealer car but likely not a deluge of repairs. And if so, I've got lemon laws on my side (mind you that costs in legal fees, but...)

Carmax seems interesting. The nearest is CT so unfortunately that won't work for us, but thanks for the heads up! I'm not so worried about haggling. I've known enough used car salesmen to know that I have no problem making them work hard for their greedy commissions and overpriced sticker prices. They give themselves plenty of wiggle room in the hopes people won't haggle.

Good call. My car was doing something alarming yesterday morning, and I realized I'd probably hit 100k miles by December.

Get a nice semi-used car =)

Unfortunately most of my cars were well over 100K. Under 100k upon sale would be a wonderful change!
