Okay, I want to start by stating I don't dislike the new Doctor Who series. I enjoy it. But I have a couple bones to pick with it.
First, it's all drama and little science. I like that they're getting a bit more into history, which kinda brings it back to the roots circa William Hartnell. That's cool. But where's the real science? The original series (I guess it's refered to as classic) had a great deal of real science (and yeah, there was some techno-babble, too) which really made it true science-fiction with a bit of drama and history. Now it's a bunch of drama (the Doctor has romantic interests in his companions and half the ladies he meets?!) and some history and once in a while a little science (mostly techno-babble a la Star Trek).
And why the hell is The Doctor hanging around Earth so much? Even when he's not on Earth, he's on a space station observing Earth or visiting New Earth, where all the humans went when Earth was destroyed by the sun going kablooey. They did this with John Pertwee but at least they had a story line behind it: the Timelords banished The Doctor there. He had no choice. Why now? Because all the Timelords are extinct? So now he has to hang about with a bunch of young humans and act like a 900+ year-old teenager? Come on!
Finally, the whole "doctor who?" gag is getting overdone. This little gag was used rarely in the "classic" series but now it seems to come up every episode. It reminds me of when I was obnoxiously overusing the whole "I hardly know her" line whenever anyone said a word anding in "er."
Still I enjoy the show. It's good to see it back. I just wish they would bring back some science, tone down the drama and get the hell away from Earth. Go visit Skaro or Logopolis or some other planet none of us have ever seen before for crying out loud!
David Tennant is good as the Doctor, but I still prefer Christopher Eccleston. It was good to see Sarah Jane Smith and K-9 again. I wonder if they'll do another five doctors type special again at some point. I think it would be great to see Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant all together. Especially seeing Colin Baker's regeneration in the mix. He would so dislike his regenerations!
