Yes my friends, it's time for another musical oddity, where I point out the similarity between two songs (at least in part). First let's listen to the melody in this wonderful power ballad off my all-time favorite Motley Crue album Too Fast For Love:

Motley Crue - "On With The Show"

Pretty groovy, no? It's kinda your typical early 80's power ballad melody. Now let's listen a melody by Green Day from their album American Idiot:

Green Day - "City of the Damned"

You may notice a very striking similarity. In fact, it's pretty much the same melody except that Green Day drops the beginning of the last phrase and ends it in that very trademark Green Day way by not only leaving off on the V chord (just like Motley Crue did) but also passing down to the third of the V from the fifth and leaving it hanging there. This makes sense because the third of the V chord is the leading tone. Essentially Green Day uses a signature melodic move to bring their melody to a conventional tension point.

And I just explained all of this in more detail to [profile] painted_wolf who is smiling and nodding and looking very confused. Sorry! :P

I loves you, but you go on the most random tangents sometimes.... (as if I were one to talk)
