Yesterday was simply marvelous. It was certainly very much needed considering some of the current ongoing stress. Our friend P. (who is an avid board gamer and minister) invited us to his house to enjoy food, company and a day of board gaming for Thanksgiving weekend. Also joining us were R. and S. who live around the corner from the UU church so we were able to carpool with them once we got out of service. Ray and his family showed up, as did the UU minister S2. and her family, so we had a very big group and lots of fun!

We started with a game of Adel Verflichtet (also known as Hoity Toity in the US) that went very quick. It was a fairly close game and P. ended up winning despite my very large end-game collection. Even had he not come in second place I was one point short with the first place points so he still would have won.

While we waited for more people to show up we played a quick five-player game of Coloretto. I felt bad for K. because she seemed to constantly get shafted. I even tried to help her at one point and P. turned it around on her. *chuckle* I believe P. also won this game and I was amazed to find I tied with R. for second because I thought I was doing horrible.

Ray showed up and four of us ended up playing Pillars of the Earth, which I really do enjoy. This game was even closer! In the end I think we were all no more than two points away from each other with the lead and tail players being only like five points apart. R. played a very smart move to deny P. from scoring HUGE points from converting his metal. At first it looked as though P. and Ray would tie for the lead but P. realized he neglected to count one of his special people cards and got the extra point needed to win the game. While this was going on, K. and J. played Chicken Cha Cha Cha with the kids.

By this time S2 and her family had shown up so we ended up playing a huge game of Wits and Wagers with five teams of two or three players each. If you've never played this game, I highly recommend it for a party game. The only games I would recommend more might be Werewolf (or you might know it as Mafia) and Time's Up. It's a trivia game but instead of having to know the exact answer, all answers are numbers. Players or teams take a shot at guessing the answer and place their guesses face down. All are revealed and arranged on a betting track in order from lowest to highest, with the middle number paying off evenly and the extremes paying off better odds. Then players/teams can either bet 10 on one answer or 5 each on two answers to hedge bets. The closest answer without going over pays off and the player/team that made the correct guess gets a bonus. S2 and family won the game with a whopping 90 points!

Ray was very kind to run an eight-player game of Diamant for us. I really like this game. It's very much a press-your-luck sort of game and there's actually a little bit of bluffing involved. Toward the end of the game we ran out of gems and started getting inventive using shells and pennies in place of gems. I finally won a game! It was very close between R. and me but I beat him by two points. I managed to get very lucky on the fourth mine when everyone dropped out and I managed to get a 9-gem tunnel before dropping. My timing was impeccable, too, because the next tile pulled would have meant my demise had I stayed!

Next we played Ave Caesar, which is one of my favorite race games. We played the more difficult track and it was very cutthroat. During either the first or second lap players are expected to pass through the lane in front of Caesar, toss their plastic coin at Caesar's stand and shout "Ave Caesar!" Otherwise players failing to do this cannot win the game because they are (fictitiously) sent for beheading. Naturally [livejournal.com profile] painted_wolf had to be a bother and blocked R. and me from doing this during the second lap (I was forced out in the first lap, too!). So R. and I, being the completely level-headed types that we are, decided if we were to be beheaded that we would go out without class, taunt Caesar as we passed him by a second time and then get in everyone's way. It was hilarious!

Most everyone left so P. and R. and I played this very odd space game where we build a fleet of ships and then try to take out each others' command ship by punching a hole in the fleet and targeting the open zone. It had one of those odd rules where you have to make silly laser sounds or your shot doesn't count, so that added a fun atmosphere to the game. I took P. out and then R. managed to hit me very hard and take me out just as I thought I was going to win. It was a fun game. I have to figure out which game it was so I can get it. The artwork
was done by John Kovalic.

We ended the night playing Pitch Car to Guns and Roses. Very cool way to wind down! Pitch Car is a great dexterity game where you flick this wooden disc representing your race car around a track for three laps. There are rules against going off the track and flipping over and bumping others off the track so you have to be very careful. The music was a nice touch that made the game all the more fun. S. and I were way behind for most of the game. [livejournal.com profile] painted_wolf won the game, with K. coming in second and P. in third place.

So yeah, fun left over gaming and company of friends.

So after all that, I'm just going to add that painted_wolf and I finally signed up for Netflix and we've arranged for the entire collection of the Emma Peel era, to be followed by the Cathy Gale era. Yay Avengers! ^_^
