Here's a quick one before I head into town for the penultimate day of hell week. Muthafuckaweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Yesterday was odd. I was convinced I had to be at a public hearing at 7:30 last night. It's actually tonight. It left me feeling a paranoid anxiety like I was supposed to be doing something but forgot what it was.
I got to be a total music geek last night, which was wicked cool. Lonewolf and I noodled around on the piano doing some improv boogie and of course the obligatory Heart and Soul and I also just noodled around. I started playing with a progression something like I - V7/V - V7 - I - IV - iv - I in C (very easy key). As I was playing around with the iv chord I realized some of that sounded familiar, realizing that I may have accidentally discovered the chord progresssion to the piano part at the end of Layla. Lonewolf and I puzzled over it until I figured out that where I thought there was a iv chord it was actually a ii half-diminished7. It totally makes sense because when you look at the third, fifth and seventh in the ii half-diminished7 chord in C (F - A flat - C) you'll notice...
... they're the iv chord! :D
Pretty coool, huh? It would have been nice if I could have figured this all out 15 years ago when I was supposed to play it at a New Years Eve gig. So the progression is...
I - I (first inversion) - IV (two bars) - I - I (first inversion) - IV (two bars) - ii half-diminished7 (two bars) - I
I have to go now.
