Oh, but sir! "Meanwhile, back at the ranch" is such a hackneyed phrase!

Yes, it is a rather tiresome cliche used by so, so many writers. "Meanwhile, back at the ranch" has nothing to do with cows or with horses or with people who work in rural areas where ranches are, or even with ranch dressing, which is creamy and put on salads. Here, the phrase refers to what I was doing while the rest of you were sleeping.
