Does the AP Make News Up?
Jan. 3rd, 2008 12:49 pmI just now (a few minutes ago) read an AP article on Yahoo! News about the Iowa caucuses. Big deal, right? Well, it was written about today, in the past tense, as though it was written this evening. A couple of problems here: Iowa is in a different time zone and we're only just in afternoon here on the east coast. It's not even afternoon in Iowa right now but some either shifty or prognosticating reporter already knows and has reported what will be going on past sundown and into the last few minutes before the caucuses. Now that's peculiar...
Here's a link to the article...
And here are some screen captures taken at around 12:45 PM (eastern time) on Thursday, January 3, 2008:

Notice at 12:45 PM on Thursday the article was posted about 5 minutes ago. Yet the article starts by claiming that the "candidates pressed (notice the use of past tense) for advantage until the final few minutes..." Oh really. It's only barely afternoon here. The Iowa caucuses start at 7:00 PM tonight (see below).

Okay, admittedly this one is a bit nitpicky since the summoning has been going on for a while and this morning probably was bitter cold, but still... writing about the evening already? It's only just passed to Noon there as I type this!

Notice it says the caucuses start at 7:00 PM here even though the rest of the article talks about the few minutes before the caucuses. Then it goes on in the next paragraph to talk about how the candidates talked on "past one more sundown..." Ummm... the sun doesn't set here for another three or four hours, and Iowa is another hour behind us and lower in latitude.
Maybe I'm being too picky, but this all seems very suspect. Obviously someone wanted to beat others to the punch...
