We had a wonderful time hanging out with everyone tonight for our last regular gaming session with Dennis. Preston cooked some delicious burgers, hot dogs and bratwurst. Dennis brought a large assortment of chips. Randy and Sarah brought a cake. We had eight people in all so we split into two groups but gamed in adjacent rooms so we could all socialize. Randy taught three people how to play Pillars of the Earth, which is an excellent resource management game. I originally planned to play this but I opted to play in the other game so Preston's wife could try Pillars. Randy made a comment that he would like me in the game so I could help teach it and I insisted I had never played. I had a couple weeks ago. Sarah said she had photos as evidence. Oops! I realized I had once I saw the board but I couldn't remember all the rules for the life of me. :P I commented that my memory was lousy and likely Windows compatible.
Kathy and I played Survive with Preston and one other person whose name I can't remember. Survive is an old Parker Brothers game from 1982 that has a Euro feel to it and is very cutthroat. Basically each player has a group of castaways that are stranded on an island and your goal is to get them off the island and swimming or boating across the water to shore on one of the four corners of the board. Meanwhile there are sea serpents, whales and sharks trying to eat/sink you. The island sinks tile by tile after each player's turn until there is nothing left or the volcano erupts. After that, while Pillars continued, we lost one player but the three of us remaining played Coloretto. I ended up getting stuck collecting far too many colors each game, which onlymeans low scores, which is bad. Sadly it's not like golf.
I couldn't help but feel old at one point. Preston's daughter asked me if I was Kathy's father. Ouch! She's so adorable, though, how she asks such the simplest and most straightforward questions and says some of the most innocent yet straightforward things. Children are so wonderful! :) Even if they do make you feel sooooooo old some times!
