We had a great time at Geeks and Gamers yesterday on Ray's opening day. I helped him finish the installs of the games and Half-Life 2 took most of the day between installing Steam and waiting for the damn game to update. While that was going on, though, we played a few games. It started by introducing Melanie to Cheapass Games with Give Me The Brain. That was fun. She was a bit disturbed by her increasing hunger while playing a game of zombies working in a fast food joint. Kathy beat us all. It's no surprise, really. She was in constant possession of the brain!
Then we played Carcasonne with some expansion tiles. I like the cathedral and Inn on the Lake tiles. They add a nice dynamic to the game without overcomplicating it. Kathy and Melanie didn't really take advantage of farmers so by the end of the game I went from being far behind to far ahead in points. Had it not been for the farms I wouldn't have won the game.
After that we played Ticket To Ride, which is one of my favorite games. Surprise. For some reason I have a thing for Euro train games. Anyhow, we played that with three players again. We had a very close competition for the longest train. I had 38 track pieces and Melanie had 37. Had she extended her track by two pieces she would have easily taken the win from me.
Ben, Judy and Dave from Mass showed up, as did Kelly, Will and Siggy. Judy bought Greed Quest so we all played. It was a good little filler game with some interesting dynamics. It has some neat bowbing features so plenty of people were getting bowbed. I've become so tired of the many Munchkin variants by Steve Jackson Games so it was actually enjoyable to see a game come from them that was of similar production style and quality but different enough to hold my interest. It got a bit confusing at times but not much more than a game of Fluxx can get, really.
We ended the night playing the first quest in Descent. Last time Kathy and I played with Ray as the Overlord we swept through the dungeon with little effort. The worst that happened was my character was turned into a monkey and near death. This time I was the Overlord and I was ruthless with the spawn cards. Mind you I was most likely nearly out of spawn cards by the middle of the dungeon but it was the opposite extreme. I killed two characters by the time they had gotten halfway through the dungeon and they couldn't get anywhere for a while. I wonder how the other quests would play out. The first quest seems to easy to tip to one extreme or the other, mainly in how the cards are played or the treasures the characters discover or the characters that are picked out. I might like to play it again to see if the trend continues. It's hard to say with just two plays. We ended up calling the game early so Ray could leave for the night and because everyone was getting frustrated.
Ray did great for his first day open and made several sales. I'm going to finish up the web site tonight so he can have it ready ASAP to promote his Grand Opening celebration pending after the holidays. The layout of the store came out really well. There's plenty of room to get around to everything, which seems rare for comic/gaming stores in New Hampshire. And he has tables for game play available for anyone to use free of charge. Kathy will most likely be running her GURPS Godzilla game there during the winter break.
Kathy spent some time drooling over Talislanta 4th edition. I spent some time drooling over the Euro games. We all had some fun gaming and hanging out. It was a great day!
