I just received my pre-ordered, autographed copy of the new Spin Doctors album "Nice Talking To Me" (NTTM) and it kicks so much ass! I love it!

Don't get me wrong: "You've Got To Believe in Something" (YGTBIS) was a good Spin Doctors album and "Here Comes The Bride" was a good album (not a good Spin Doctors album, though), this is a GREAT Spin Doctors album. Here's the best analogy I can provide:

Godzilla started in 1954 with a great movie that was very different and received rave reviews. They followed it up with a good album but didn't receive nearly as much good attention. Still, it was a good Godzilla movie. Then the seventies hit and Godzilla got all goofy and doped out and really departed from the whole idea that made it so great in the first place.

Then came "Godzilla 1985" which brought a rebirth to the Godzilla line of movies and a return of certain characters. They said, "Hey, let's forget the seventies even happened and let's release this movie that takes place years after the first as though Godzilla is only now coming back." And it was great! It was refreshing and inspiring!

So there you have it: "Nice Talking To Me" is to Spin Doctors as "Godzilla 1985" was to Godzilla.

"Nice Talking To Me" does draw some of the good elements from YGTBIS (the Anthony Krizan album) that I really liked: the lush vocal harmonies. One thing I enjoyed about that albumwas that they added these thick, beautiful harmonies, but they were in need of some fine tuning and tightening. NTTM does just that. It takes the harmonies and tightens them up so they sound absolutely superb. It's a nice touch to the return of the original lineup and the classic Spin Doctors sound.

Some of the songs were old songs that they never finished, whether it was an old lyric set or an old guitar riff, but given that revitalized, modern Spin Doctors approach. It was so good hearing the original four guys together again after eleven years and having an album that could easily replace YGTBIS as the third studio release.

I love the song "Sugar." The lush vocal harmonies combined with the classic SD sound just sums up the whole album. "Can't Kick The Habit" and "Genuine" allow Chris and Eric the ability to incorporate their solo work in as Spin Doctors songs. I think they fit in so beautifully with the album while serving as a testament to the years when the two had gone their separate ways as artists only to return with a more solidly renewed artistic relationship.

I was also very pleasantly surprised when I opened the CD to find it came with a DVD of live performances and a behind the scenes featurette. So not only did I get the new CD, but it was hand-autographed by the guys, came with a special DVD and only cost me $19 including the shipping and handling charge!

I highly recommend this album, especially if you're a Spin Doctors fan from days of old. The only drawback is that Ruffnation Music is an RIAA label so keep in mind buying this will be buying an RIAA product. Bummer. But for those of us willing to make the occasional exception for good albums, this is one worth making an exception.
