I figured out the PSX -> USB converter issue! I found a program called JoyToKey that allows you to map joystick buttons to keyboard keys. So I mapped my directionals to the corresponding keyboard arrows, left JoyToKey minimized while I opened StepMania, mapped my directions in StepMania again and everything worked. I can now simultaneously hit L+R or U+D and have it register! I don't have to return my converter and I can now start playing StepMania on my PC! So for $20 I got myself a used soft pad and a new PSX -> USB cobnverter and avoided having to pay outrageous monthly gym memberships and I can get some decent indoor aerobic exercise that's fun. Go me!
