This weekend I finally hooked a video monitor to the VCR so we could watch television. Cable is included with our apartment and I figure I may as well have the ability to check on the channels I run once in a while. Also I figured it might be nice to catch a show once in a while. Yesterday I came home from work around 4:30 pm and [livejournal.com profile] painted_wolf had the tv on. It stayed on all night until we went to bed around 12:30 am.

When I was younger that sort of thing was commonplace in the home. The television was almost always on. My sisters, parents and I would sit in front of it for hours on end with no trouble. Last night I just couldn't take it. Even just going to the other room wasn't enough. The sound of it was driving me bonkers. It's amazing how just going without something for so long drastically changes your attitude toward it. Only three days with a television hooked up in the house and I want to get rid of it.

Wow, that's amazing. I have a TV in my room, but because its on a circuit thing I almost never have it on because I always forget to turn the power on and then I'm too lazy to get up and do it. At home though the TV is always on, and I usually use it as background noise, though I don't think that's a good idea. I'm kinda jealous that TV makes you feel that way hehe, that means you are a more enlightened person than most of us are!

lol I don't know about more enlightened, but definitely more sensitive with it. ;) I find it incredibly ironic, though, that I work managing two television channels and I can't stand television. Then again, community access television is entirely different from commercial television...

I have three shows I'd turn the TV on for ... and two of them aren't currently airing new episodes. Even after Heroes is over, I immediately turn the TV back off, because I can't stand it. My parents always have it on as background noise, too ... even right now, I can hear it on down the hall. I'd rather have music or quiet than the sound of endless babble.

That's where I'm at right now. I'd much rather have music or silence. Television is just way too obnoxious! That's one of the challenges of visiting my parents: the television is always on.

I have found that I enjoy the silence in between things. When Steve is away, there is too much silence and I will put in a movie. At least I know it is good background and not just junk.

Yes, movies in the background aren't so bad. I agree. There's just something about television (except local access television, but I'm biased) that's just really nerve-grating. It just completely batters the senses!
