few months ago [livejournal.com profile] painted_wolf and I had a conversation, somewhat triggered by a conversation I had with her brother, about transportation and rising fuel costs. My point was that we would reach a point where trucking will not be a cost-effective method and we'll see a resurrection of the railways for transporting goods. Sure enough, now there are a couple of regional planning groups in NH that are discussing this very thing for transportation of goods and people, and I'm seeing videos coming in for cablecast on the local PEG channels that are promoting the concept.

I'm actually pretty excited about this. I'm wondering if it really will be more environmentally friendly than having all of these trucks and buses driving around. Of course, a lot of effort will have to go into rebuilding rail lines that the state ripped up for snowmobile trails, but at least the corridors still exist.

That'd be awesome if it happened. ... I'm sure you'd get people trying to complain about pollution from the engines.... and there will have to be a LOT of rebuilding, especially since I'm sure there are more tracks than those in the Weirs that got washed out.

But still. That? Would be awesome.

I got them Gas Prices So High We Be Takin' a Traaaaain Blues.

I think it would be awesome if this resulted in Maglev trains in Canada and the US. That would just be cool.
