Lately I've been on a weird musical listening kick. I've really been into Klaatu. For those who don't know them, they were a 70s/80s art rock band from Canada that was mistakenly assumed to be the Beatles in disguise even though they came out and declared they were not the Beatles. Eventually when the world finally got the point they blamed the band. The music is incredibly awesome. The name? It comes from "The Day The Earth Stood Still," though many of you may remember the perversion of the phrase that made an appearance in "Army of Darkness."

I've also been itching again to get my hands on a physical copy of the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" and Brian Wilson's "Smile," which was supposed to be the Beach Boys' "Smile" following "Pet Sounds" but never happened until just last year when Brian dusted it off and finished it up.

Wow. That sentence had more runs than a pair of cheap nylons.

I've also been digging some of the newer bands coming out these days. Pop/rock music is starting to get a more intelligent sound to it, though I fear it may only be happening through coincidence in that they're emulating the 80s pop/rock sound. The jury's still out on this.

I'm also digging State Radio. Any guitarist that can make a good sounding guitar from a Castrol tin oil can has my approval!

Oh, and also The Decemberists are pretty freaking cool. They have the same feel as Ben Folds Five.

Have I mentioned I am so happy to hear keyboards making a comeback in rock?
