Another freebie I picked up from WPCR is the album 355 by Culper Ring. Culper Ring was a side project of Neurosis guitarist Steve Von Till. Neurosis sounds like something I would definitely enjoy so I have to check them out at some point, too, but Culper Ring is very much different. It's very much mellow, ambient noise. It's vaguely pre-Dark Side Pink Floyd (think studio portion of Ummagumma) and a a touch like Pat Metheny's Zero Tolerance For Silence (only better because quite frankly the Metheny album sits in my collection taking up space because I don't think very highly of it). All of the tracks on 355 are untitled and flow into each other, so really the album works as one piece of music in spite of having been improvised over three separate occasions between 1997 and 2001. While I don't generally role-play, I could see this being great ambient music for anything macabre or space-based.
I've once again been bitten with the urge to play in a band. I really like the idea of playing bass more and more. Alas, I wonder if I would really have the time and know I don't have the proper equipment. It's a nice dream, though.
