RIP Crappy HP
Feb. 10th, 2005 04:25 pmSnow storms occasionally bring power outages. This is why we buy surge protection for our PCs. Yet even with double surgeprotection my HP was not safe. I had just barely finished e-filing with the IRS when the power went out. It was only for a minute. When it came back, the computer did not. I got simply "Error. Press any key to reboot." I pressed the elusive any key only to get a repeat. "Error. Press any key to reboot." In my panic and frustration I filled the entire screen with the message "Error. Press any key to reboot."
It's passed on. This HP is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. Its processes are now history. It's off the twig. It's kicked the bucket, it's shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-HP!!
And so, I will begin the task of building a new one for myself this time. In my moment of laziness last time I broke down and purchased a Mall*Wart special. I didn't want to be bothered with building my own again. Lesson learned. This time I will build a new computer. I have the technology. I have the capability to make New Hampton's first supercomputer. Mine will be that computer. Better than it was before. Better ... stronger ... faster.
Or perhaps just functioning will work for now.
So my timing on purchasing the iMac was quite fortuitous. Some days it pays to be a Brother of Bob, what with all the impeccable timing it brings and all. And now with a simple power outage my iMac takes it's place as rightful ruler of the desk. The power outage has also given me my impetus to switch from Windows to Linux. Thanks to HP, I am going to have to procure and install a new operating system on whatever I build. It will be Linux. I will use VMWare or some other Windows emulator to run my Windows software. So long, Windows.
And I will also be sure to buy a UPS this time.
I do find it ironic, though, that both computers were on at the time and plugged into the same power strip, yet the iMac recovered like it was nothing and the HP died. Go Apple!
