Feb. 28th, 2007 10:51 amLauren, if you're reading this, thanks again for the Compaq you gave me this past summer. It proved very useful!
Just yesterday I went to fix a computer for my adopted grandparents. It was pretty old. Only a Pentium. They had a power surge during a recent outage and the only thing I can assume is it fried the motherboard. Since I had the Compaq kicking around in storage I figured I may as well get them set up with a nice newer computer. So I swapped out their hard drives and a couple bits of hardware (they really didn't need a video card with S-video out) and had them back up and running in no time with a much faster computer. Everyone was happy!
I was astounded over last weekend. I was able to easily network a computer running Windows ME. I didn't think it was possible. Go figure! I was doing this because Sheridan got a new computer and asked me to clean up his old computer and get it ready to give away to his sister-in-law. His new computer has Windows Vista and, aside from the annoyance of the computer asking me if I really wanted to install a program every time I installed a program, I was fairly impressed. The gadgets are kinda neat and overall they did an okay job of snazzing it up without completely abandoning the familiar layout of Windows. The new Windows Media Center is pretty spiffy. Now it just remains to be seen how stable it is. Until it's proven reliable I'll stick with XP for a Windows platform. It's probably the most stable OS Microsoft has released since MS-DOS was in its prime.
Life is okay in general. Work has been a major source of frustration and stress lately but it looks as though things might be winding down a bit. That would be nice. I am concerned about one of our friends. She has depression issues and lately she has been in a serious funk. She doesn't talk, just shuts down. I wish there ws something we could do for her to help her but she just seems so distant.
I'm enjoying the new computer and looking forward to playing some of the new board games we bought recently. Aside from that, it's the usual eat, sleep and work.
