Last night I had a great time hanging out in the studio with my friend Sean during the Charred Pencil Radio Show on WKNH 91.3. The theme was songs from 1967 and I was tasked with picking five songs from 1967 I couldn't live without. This morning one of the songs that didn't make either of my lists was stuck in my head.
My original list turned out to be all white male. Mind you they're good bands and good songs from great albums, but this just wouldn't do. The first list I came up with:
- Astronomy Domine - Pink Floyd
- I Can See For Miles - The Who
- Light My Fire - The Doors
- Heroin - The Velvet Underground
- Call Any Vegetable - The Mothers of Invention
The morning of I decided that what I really needed to do was honor the kick-ass ladies of 1967, so I tossed the original list and came up with a new list:
- Respect - Aretha Franklin
- (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman - Aretha Franklin (written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin)
- Ball And Chain - Big Brother and the Holding Company
- White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
- California Nights - Leslie Gore
As it turns out it was good that I switched things up because my original list had some overlap with his playlist. He already had A Natural Woman on his list so he ended up adding in Astronomy Domine for me. He also had time to fill so Zappa and The Mothers made it on air, too. Unfortunately Leslie Gore didn't make the cut.
Sean picked a song that is near and dear to my heart because it reminds me of Kathy, so he sent it out as a dedication from me to her (she was at home listening with our son).
Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
So much fun listening to great tunes with a friend and having conversations about our similar experiences with music from our childhood!
